█ India has a long and unique history of art, with several indigenous crafts and practices passed down across generations of artisan communities. Unfortunately, many of these artisans today face a struggle for survival, competing against the cheap, rapidly produced products of the modern age.
█ COPPERU has sensed this problem of the artisan communities and decided to take an initiative to help these artisans to claim their rightful share of the global market, by supporting and promoting their artwork across the sate and nation.
█ Moving toward the milestones of it's motive, COPPERU, aims at reviving the dying craft form of the indigenous Thathera community of Brass City - Rewari of Haryana State, (situated within the boundaries of Delhi NCR - Nation Capital Region), who have the distinction of practicing India’s unique craft form.
█ The Thatheras of Brass City - Rewari are a community of skilled craftsmen who specialize in the traditional technique of hammering brass and copper sheets into traditional utensils.
█ In Haryana, the Thathera claim to have been Rajput, who abandoned their traditional occupation and started to manufacture silver and gold coins. They immigrated from Rajasthan in the 19th Century and settled initially in Rewari, Haryana. The community then took to manufacturing of utensils.
█ COPPERU aims at reviving the languishing craft of Thatheras all across India through a three faceted approach: institutionalization of artisans, design development and training, and market access through modern techniques.
█ COPPERU's vision is to highlight the need of bringing highly skilled metal-working artisans (mainly Copper, Brass and Bronze) into the economic mainstream. The organization also promotes a culture- based development model that focuses on heritage and craft preservation.
